What is IBM MQ?

IBM MQ connects applications and microservices in private datacenters, across hybrid or multi-cloud environments, and at the edge of the enterprise. It allows businesses, from large enterprises to startups, to ensure every order, every payment, and every customer interaction counts. Messages between applications are delivered reliably once-and-only-once and applications are decoupled to enable rapid response to sudden traffic increases or system outages. Businesses can tap into the value of existing mission-critical data to gain real-time insights and ensure the safety of customer and business data with comprehensive security mechanisms.

MQ is a critical component of our infrastructure. It is used by most of our Platinum services including Mobil banking, Internet banking, Payments and customer applications. As our IT infrastructure is made up of a number of platforms from Mainframe/ Linux/ Solaris/ Windows / Tandem it has proven to be the ideal choice of product to enable seamless and guaranteed delivery of data across all these platforms. MQ has been a key product for our company for over 30 years and continues to be used in the development of new applications. MQ is also used to send / receive data from external partners which again is critical to our business
  • Guarantee delivery of data
  • Reliability
  • Continually looks to add new functions.
  • Support of product is excellent
  • There is limitation on number of svrconn connections you can have to MQ on the mainframe which has been an major issue for us. This has been an issue for us for over 4 years and still no fix although I am aware IBM have been working on a solution over the last year.
  • When upgrading to MQ V9.3 on our MQ appliances there is no fall-back option. This was the same for MQ V9.2 upgrade from MQ V9.0. For production upgrades this I believe is not acceptable.
  • AMS is not supplied as part of the standard mainframe MQ licence. You need an extra licence. IBM tell customers how important security and protecting data is yet they still want to charge for this software. The cost of MQ on the mainframe is not cheap so I would expect AMS to be part of the base product.
Suited:
  • As we have critical data such as payments which needs to be managed across a number of platforms.
  • MQ ensures guaranteed delivery of this data.
  • Setting up a new application to use MQ is a relatively simple process.
  • To track data both internally and externally you can set MQ up to send back acknowledgement . Very useful if one party say they have not received some data.
Not suited.
  • If an application has a requirement to get information from a database without any concerns of losing data . Using JDBC connecting directly to the database can reduces the number of jumps the application needs to make to get to the database.
  • If an application wants to store information and then send as a large batch file it is not recommended to use MQ. MQ applications should be used for data which needs to be sent immediately. MFT (MQ file transfer) however can utilise MQ for file transfers
  • Reliability of the MQ software has ensure minimal downtime of the service. Downtime of this service can cause serious cost implication and fines.
  • Security is critical and MQ ensure all data is encrypted in transit using SSL certs. Having this in place ensure not audit finding on the product.
  • We process over 14 millions MQ messages per day which shows its criticality to the business.
  • Cost of support is minimal. We have a team of 4 who support MQ across all platforms
We get excellent support from IBM on MQ
Would like to give a 10 but have to base this on the last 5 years. Over the last 2 years I would give a 10
Very similar. Reliability has been excellent

An important solution to get the right communication between all users in the organisation, with better communication we have achieved more internal progress and of course have more relationship with colleagues. We have fluid communication between applications where fortunately we can make distributed transactions.IBM MQ has had a simple implementation process, reliable and with the security we all need for communication, it ensures the delivery of files without being filtered without permission. The speed with which messages and documents are sent and delivered is unique.
  • Prevention of attacks on information.
  • Queue monitors.
  • Sending security in documents and messages.
  • It runs asynchronously, so there will be no loss of any information.
  • Some problems with recent updates, they have not worked properly and it is a problem at the moment. Everything else is going very well.
It has worked for our organisation from the first moment, we had a somewhat broken or distant internal communication as we did not have a tool for these things, when IBM MQ arrived everything started to flow correctly, we are always in contact and we could send all the necessary information at any time of the day. I also like the fact that it can be compatible with other platforms and brockers.
  • Availability and deployment is feasible for small teams, does not generate high administrative costs.
  • IBM MQ increases productivity for the secure delivery of information between all enterprise applications, whether installed on our infrastructure or in the cloud.
  • It is a cost-effective software considering the results achieved with its integration, deployment and overall feasibility.
Our requests and requirements are always attended by an expert on the subject in an estimated time of 30 minutes, in the event that the problem cannot be solved in a short time its technical support team follows up and is attentive to the resolution of our request. IBM MQ provides high-tech technological support that has allowed us to work without interruptions of more than a few minutes.
The messages are delivered instantly with this software and it integrates with our technology stack, in terms of availability we only had one failure when we were doing some testing and integration with third parties, the features of this software make it always available and its deployment is easy for the company, it does not generate expenses due to failures.

  • Queue message control and direct integration.
  • Secure communication TLS
  • Easy to deploy in public and private cloud.
  • Their implementation in the public and private cloud was very easy, this generates a lot of trust and gratitude with IBM MQ. It is also a surprise its good system deployment and integration.
  • We plan to increase the scale of use of this tool in more departments, we know how is its integration and we will update our systems with improvements and of course IBM MQ must be part of this process.

IBM MQ is used by many projects / products within the organisation. It solves the fundamental problem of interoperability between different applications within and outside the organisation. The Messaging platform provides the Asynchronous capabilities and also guarantees message integrity and persistent delivery and thereby provide reliable communication between different applications and product set.
  • reliable messaging
  • JMS compliant
  • Different message types supported
  • scalable
  • Asynchronous messaging
  • Stable product
  • learning curve may be longer than other products
  • Needs people with good experience to setup and maintain
  • Third party tools & clients are not readily available
  • No opensource
Best suited for
- To send high business sensitive information from one system to another
- When systems are built using different technology frameworks or languages
- When architecture demands different messaging styles like pub/sub, one to one, etc.,
Not very good for
- small teams / products
- automatic scaling requirements
  • Asynchronous messaging
  • JMS complaint features
  • Security and reliable messaging
  • Different types of messaging formats
  • Was able to seamlessly integrate customer facing applications with Supply side applications
  • 100% uptime and reliable performance
  • Transparent additions of additional clients / systems
IBM MQ is very stable and a proven product compared to other Messaging platforms available. Performance was better than WSO2 product and also the RabbitMQ. Though Kafka and IBM MQ is not directly comparable, Kafka is more suited for event based systems and also where there is some liberty to use custom APIs and libraries more freely.

IBM MQ is used to facilitate data transfer between business partners. We utilize the high availability, persistent features to guarantee data delivery.
  • Fantastic quality of product services and features.
  • Security is of great importance and MQ satisfies our needs.
  • Interoperability with customers for data collection and sharing is made easy through IBM MQ.
  • Support is always one PMR away.
  • Monitoring is generally a feature left to third party apps. Providing better monitoring tool would be a great market differentiator.
  • Built in alarms and notifications (see above improvement) would be helpful.
  • GUI modeling of queue managers, channels and queues would be a good improvement.
Well suited for data collection/distribution externally. Not great for dev-ops internally. Too restrictive and not flexible enough.
  • Positive gains in data sharing. The time to market to set up new customers is relatively easy. Not touchless but easy.
  • Few maintenance costs. It just works.
  • Upgrades are painless so little money is spent on them, yielding positive ROIs.
  • Activemq, HornetQ and Kafka
IBM MQ is the product for inter-business communication for security, flexibility and scalability.
